Dental implants: a brief introduction

Dental implants are one of the most exciting developments of the past three decades in the world of dentistry. At Soho practice PS Dental Care, our implantology team have restored many patients’ smiles with the help of implants. They have the additional benefit of giving back full functionality to your jaw, and are in many cases the perfect tooth replacement solution.

We welcome patients of all ages who have one or more missing teeth for a consultation about dental implants. First, your experienced implant dentist will undertake a detailed medical and dental history and conduct a thorough clinical examination, to check that implant treatment is right for you.

The planning of implant placement is extremely precise, and makes use of the latest computer software, CT scans and x-rays. Not only will your clinician ensure that your implants are positioned in the perfect place to support the required number of new teeth, they will also ensure that nerves and other vital structures are avoided.

At our Soho clinic we usually place dental implants under local anaesthetic, and many patients have reported it is a more bearable experience than having teeth removed.

In most cases, after your implants have been placed, they will then be left for a few months to heal. During this period, they will integrate fully with your jaw bone, and will provide a stable anchor on to which your new teeth will then be attached.

If you have one missing tooth, your dentist will usually place a single implant with a crown attached. For multiple or all missing teeth, you may be fitted with an implant-retained bridge, or with dentures attached to your implants.

Whichever option you have, your new teeth will look and act just like natural teeth, and will stay exactly where they should be.
