What is cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is a specialised field of dentistry that focuses on improving the appearance and aesthetics of your teeth. While general dentistry focuses on preventive and restorative care treatments such as fillings and root canals, cosmetic dentistry treatments aim to improve the appearance of your teeth and gums.

What can cosmetic dentistry fix?

Cosmetic dentistry provides solutions to a large number of issues you may be experiencing with your teeth; these include but are not limited to issues such as chipped or cracked teeth, small gaps that form between your teeth, discolouration or staining, misaligned and misshapen teeth. Provided your teeth and gums are relatively healthy, you can undergo most cosmetic dental treatments with your dentist Soho. Some of the more popular dental cosmetic treatments we offer at PS Dental Care include veneers, cosmetic bonding, teeth whitening and Invisalign.

What are veneers?

Veneers are strong shells made of a thin layer of medical grade porcelain. They are designed to adhere to the front surface of your teeth in order to conceal cosmetic flaws such as cracks, discolouration and even chips. If taken care of thoroughly, veneers can last for up to ten years without needing any replacement. The process involves your dentist Soho needing to remove some of your natural enamel in order for the veneer to adhere to the tooth and not impede your bite. A significant benefit of having veneers is that you do not always require a full set to cover all your teeth, as it is common for people to only get enough veneers to cover the teeth they are concerned about.

What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is a procedure in which a durable plastic named resin is applied to the surface of your teeth and then hardened with a light in order to bond the material to your teeth. Your dentist Soho will often use composite bonding to conceal hairline cracks and discolouration of your teeth, and it also has the ability to change the shape of your teeth in order to make them look more cohesive and uniform. A benefit of composite bonding is that the treatment is entirely reversible as it does not require any changing of your natural tooth such as shaving or removal. Composite bonds usually last from five to seven years if maintained properly; the treatment is painless and can be carried out and completed in just one sitting.

Teeth whitening?

You may find over time your teeth begin to stain or become discoloured; this can be caused by a variety of lifestyle factors such as your caffeine intake, certain foods you eat, smoking, medication, and poor oral hygiene. Over time, even thorough brushing may not eradicate the stains and discolouration on your teeth, and you may require something more advanced. Fortunately, professional teeth whitening can remove any staining and safely lighten the shade of your teeth making them look brighter and whiter. You can be offered both in-office or at-home teeth whitening, with the former taking one hour to complete by a dental hygienist or dentist and the latter taking up to a couple of weeks to complete. It is important to note that the results of teeth whitening need to be maintained and the treatment may need to be repeated regularly.
